I'll tell you what I can. Bar Harbor is a town that runs on three engines and remembers everything. One of the things it remembers is a shop that has been selling books since the year on that sign. I stood in front of it in February. It was open. That's most of the clue right there, if you're paying attention.
What we found
A bookstore that the town's own record reports as the oldest in Maine, open through the winter when a lot of the waterfront isn't. It predates the 1947 fire that reshaped the island and predates the laboratory that is now its biggest employer. The sign carries a founding year. The door does not.
Why it might matter
Because "who stays through February" is the real question about any tourist town, and a shop that has stayed for that long is a kind of answer. If you're thinking about living here, not visiting, this is the block to stand on.

"Oldest in Maine" is the town's claim, and we're passing it along as theirs. I haven't found the record that settles it and I'm not going to pretend I have. Hours change in the off-season; call before you drive three hours on a Tuesday in January. And parking downtown in July is its own adventure—that's the personal part.
