Magnesium: what the studies say, what they don't, and what I take.

The honest version, with the citations, and the part where you ask your own clinician.

My Granny had a rule I've never once caught being wrong: if it looks too easy, look again. Magnesium is the internet's favorite too-easy answer right now — sleep, anxiety, cramps, focus, all of it, one capsule, $19.99. So let's look again, with the citations, like we do.

What we found

The magnesium literature is real. It is also mixed, and the mixing happens in two places the ads rarely mention: dose and form. Citrate, glycinate, oxide, threonate — they absorb differently, they're studied for different things, and the study that impressed you was probably a different form at a different dose than the bottle in your cart. That's not a scandal. That's just what the record actually looks like when you read it instead of the headline.

Why it might matter

Shift workers, road people, and the chronically stressed are exactly the crowd the marketing aims at — tired, wired, and ready to spend. Some of us genuinely run low; food-first still covers most people most of the way. Pumpkin seeds, black beans, almonds, dark leafy greens — the boring list, faithfully cheap, no affiliate link required.

What's uncertain, difficult, or personal

Whether YOU are actually short on magnesium is a labs-and-clinician question, not a vibes question — and the common blood test only tells part of the story, which is another reason to have that conversation instead of guessing. Some forms will send you sprinting for a bathroom you don't have on a highway. And if you're on blood pressure meds, certain antibiotics, or have kidney disease, this is a talk-first situation, full stop.

What I keep in the truck, since I said I'd always tell you plainly: a trace-minerals magnesium — the full mineral family, not one isolated form. Evenings, when I use it. My clinician knows my list. That's a data point of one, cited as opinion, not a recommendation wearing a lab coat.

One honest next step

Before you buy anything: one week, add two magnesium-rich foods a day from the boring list. Costs a few dollars, interacts with nothing. If you still want to try a supplement after that, ask your clinician about form and dose for YOUR situation — bring your med list. The dispensary has clean options and I earn on them, said plainly, right here where you can see it.

Trace minerals magnesium

A full-spectrum trace-mineral magnesium — the whole boring mineral family riding along, the way it shows up in food, not a single isolated form chasing a headline. Read the note above before you read this box.

Questions I get asked

Which form of magnesium should I buy?

That's a your-clinician question, because the honest answer depends on what you're solving and what you're taking. What I'll say generally: the cheapest form on the shelf is usually the one your body absorbs worst, which is how it got that price.

Can I just take it and see if I sleep better?

Plenty of people do, and for most healthy adults modest doses are low-risk — but 'most' and 'modest' are doing real work in that sentence, and interactions are realer than the ads. Ten minutes with your clinician beats a month of guessing.

Why do you sell it if the evidence is mixed?

Because a good chunk of my people genuinely run short, and if they're going to buy it anyway I'd rather it be tested and clean than whatever's trending. I earn on the dispensary, it never changes what I write, and both of those things are true at the same time — that's why I show you the mixed evidence first.
